The work that happens before design.

Design decisions are only defensible if something sits underneath them. Strategy is that something, and it is the part most studios skip.

What brand strategy actually is

It is not a mood board and it is not a set of values that could belong to any competitor. Strategy is a decision about where your business sits in its market, supported by evidence, and specific enough to rule things out.

A principle that never costs you anything is not a principle. If your positioning does not make you say no to some clients, some products or some messages, it is not doing any work.

What the research covers

Audience definition: who is actually making the buying decision, which is frequently not the person using the product. Competitor audit: what the people you are compared against are doing, and where the gaps are. Category analysis: which conventions in your sector are load-bearing and which are simply habit.

We also run structured analysis of the business itself, including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, because the strategic problem is often a mismatch between what a company has earned and what it is able to show.

Why it changes the design brief

For a children's martial arts academy we found that every competitor was selling toughness, while the parents actually paying were buying reassurance and explicitly did not want intimidating training. That single finding inverted the entire visual direction.

No amount of logo iteration would have produced that answer. It came out of the research, which is the point.

Common questions

Do I need brand strategy before a logo?

If you can state clearly who you serve and why they should choose you over the obvious alternative, and everyone in your business would answer the same way, you can go straight to identity. If not, strategy first will save you paying for the design twice.

What do I actually receive from a brand strategy project?

A documented audience definition, a competitor and category audit, a positioning direction, and the brand values and messaging territory that follow from it. It is a document you can hand to any future agency, not just to us.

Can you do strategy without doing the design?

Yes. Strategy is delivered as a standalone engagement and the output is designed to be usable by whoever executes it.
